High-Resolution Simulation of Polar Lows over Norwegian and Barents Seas Using the COSMO-CLM and ICON Models for the 2019–2020 Cold Season

The lack of meteorological observations at high latitudes and the small size relatively short lifetime polar lows (PLs) constitute a problem in simulation prediction these phenomena by numerical models. On other hand, PLs, which are rapidly developing, can lead to such extreme weather events as stormy waves, strong winds, icing ships, snowfalls with low visibility, influence communication along Arctic seas. This article is devoted studying possibility different model configurations resolutions. results experiments for Norwegian Barents seas grid spacings 6.5 2 km using ICON-Ru ICON (ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic) spacing COSMO-CLM (Climate Limited-area Modeling) configuration COSMO (COnsortium Small-scale MOdelling) presented cold season 2019–2020. All used demonstrated realistic lows. showed slightly more accurate analyzed cases. best runs times less than day.
